United Way Day of Caring

September 18, 2014

On Friday October 3, FLY will be participating in the United Way Day of Caring. Our project is to work at an urban community garden, a collaborative garden on shared open space maintained by neighbors, volunteers and community partners. Products of the garden are shared with the community.

Our volunteer efforts at these New Haven community gardens impact the community by:

  • Beautifying vacant lots revitalizing communities in urban areas
  • Providing opportunities for individuals to engage in physical activity, skill building, create green spaces and reconnect with nature remembering the benefits of protecting our precious green space
  • Improving social well-being through strengthening social connections while increasing local food supply and access to healthy, fresh and highly nutritious food
  • Increasing community food security,  a condition in which all community residents obtain a safe, culturally acceptable, nutritionally adequate diet through a sustainable food system that maximizes community self-reliance and social justice

We hope that you can join us for either part or all of the day!
